High-level diplomatic discussions in Tehran aimed at de-escalating the US-Israel conflict with Iran have yielded “significant progress,” according to Pakistani officials following a daylong mission to the Iranian capital.
The Pakistani delegation, led by Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, held comprehensive talks on August 24 with top Iranian leadership, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei.
The diplomatic push focused on preventing further regional military escalation, establishing a permanent end to the conflict, and securing the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Discussions centered on restoring the “Islamabad MoU,” a Pakistan-mediated interim framework signed in June 2026 that faltered following renewed Gulf maritime strikes and expired in mid-August.
During the meetings, President Pezeshkian emphasized that any lasting resolution requires a shift in American diplomacy, stating that the United States must abandon coercive measures and intimidation tactics.
The mediation comes amid intensifying economic and military pressure, as the Trump administration threatens sanctions against nations supporting Tehran while Iran warns of potential disruptions to regional oil exports.
