July 8: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C., today to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the NATO military alliance.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the uncertain political climate surrounding U.S. President Joe Biden will heavily influence the leaders’ summit, which begins officially on Tuesday.
Concerns are mounting among NATO countries about the potential return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, given his critical stance on the alliance and his previous assertions that he would not defend NATO members who fail to meet defense spending targets, including Canada.
Trudeau aims to rally support for military aid to Ukraine amidst growing skepticism in the U.S. and Europe about continuing the conflict.
Additionally, Defence Minister Bill Blair is set to address Canada’s Arctic defense at the Foreign Policy Security Forum in Washington later today. He will later join Trudeau and Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly at the NATO leaders’ summit later this week.
