Prime Minister Carney participates in a virtual G7 leaders’ meeting on the situation in the Middle East

Prime Minister Mark Carney joined fellow G7 leaders in a virtual meeting to address the rapidly escalating situation in the Middle East and its growing geopolitical and economic consequences.

The meeting, convened by French President Emmanuel Macron, brought together key global leaders including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, U.S. President Donald Trump, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

During the discussion, leaders strongly condemned Iran’s strikes against civilians and civilian infrastructure, warning that the attacks risk further destabilizing the region. They emphasized the urgent need to prevent broader regional escalation and reaffirmed the importance of supporting partners in the Middle East, including Gulf states facing growing security threats.

The leaders also reviewed the global economic impact of the conflict, particularly the surge in energy prices. In response, they voiced support for a decision by the International Energy Agency (IEA) to release 400 million barrels of oil from emergency reserves to help stabilize global markets and offset supply disruptions caused by the crisis.

Ensuring secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, was also a key focus of the talks. Prime Minister Carney reiterated Canada’s support for international efforts to protect maritime trade routes and uphold freedom of navigation.

G7 leaders additionally condemned indiscriminate attacks by Hezbollah, reaffirming their support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The leaders agreed to remain in close coordination as the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve.
