Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Announces Canada Will Meet NATO Spending Target by 2032

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will meet NATO’s requirement for member countries to spend at least 2% of their GDP on the military by 2032. Speaking at the NATO summit in Washington DC, Trudeau defended Canada against critics who use “crude mathematical calculations” to evaluate its contributions, emphasizing that Canada “continually punches above its weight.” As NATO celebrates its 75th anniversary, there is growing pressure on members to meet the spending target. Currently, Canada spends 1.34% of its GDP on the military and ranks seventh among 32 NATO nations in defense spending.
