Lawyers representing Canada’s Minister of Public Safety are appearing in Federal Court on Friday in an effort to keep an alleged member of the Bishnoi gang in Canadian custody as legal proceedings continue.
The case centres on a man accused of murder who is alleged to have ties to the Bishnoi gang, an organized criminal network that has been linked by law enforcement to violent crimes, including extortion, targeted killings and transnational criminal activity.
The federal government is challenging efforts that could result in the accused being released or removed from Canadian custody while the case moves through the courts.
The hearing comes amid growing concerns over the presence and activities of alleged Bishnoi gang operatives in Canada, particularly following several high-profile investigations into organized crime and targeted violence.
Federal Court is expected to hear arguments from both sides before determining whether the accused should remain in custody as the legal process continues.
