Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has been confirmed as the voice of Jatayu in the highly anticipated mythological film Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor. The filmmakers announced the casting on Tuesday, October 13, alongside a new character poster ahead of the film’s worldwide theatrical release on November 5, 2026.
The newly unveiled poster introduces Jatayu, the legendary bird associated with courage, sacrifice and righteousness in the Hindu epic. One image features a close-up of the character’s intense expression, while another depicts the majestic bird with its wings fully extended.
Sharing the announcement on social media, the filmmakers introduced Jatayu under the title The Wings of Dharma, highlighting the character’s bravery and commitment to protecting what is right.
In the traditional Ramayana narrative, Jatayu attempts to rescue Sita after she is abducted by Ravana. Despite confronting a significantly more powerful opponent, the bird fights to protect her, becoming a symbol of selflessness, loyalty and sacrifice.
Kher’s involvement adds another prominent name to the ambitious cinematic adaptation, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra.
The film features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. Sunny Deol is also part of the ensemble cast, portraying Hanuman.
The announcement comes just days before advance ticket bookings for Ramayana Part 1 begin on October 20, coinciding with the Hindu festival of Dussehra.
The filmmakers recently confirmed that the first instalment will premiere simultaneously in India and international markets on November 5, ending speculation that its Indian release would take place two days after its overseas debut.
The film will be screened in premium theatrical formats worldwide as part of its international release strategy.
The two-part adaptation aims to bring the ancient Indian epic to contemporary audiences through an extensive ensemble cast and large-scale cinematic storytelling.
With advance bookings approaching and promotional material continuing to be released, anticipation is building for one of the year’s most prominent Indian film releases.
