The Sealdah court in Kolkata on Monday gave life imprisonment till death to Sanjay Roy convicted of the RG Kar doctor’s rape and murder.
The court said the case did not fall under the ‘rarest of the rare’ category. It directed the state to pay a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the doctor’s family.
The prosecution had demanded death penalty for Roy. “We pray for the highest penalty to maintain people’s faith in society,” the CBI lawyer had told the court ahead of the sentencing.
Roy on his part had told the court, “I am being framed as I have not committed any crime. I have not done anything, still have been held guilty.”
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das had on Saturday declared Roy guilty of rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee at the hospital on August 9 last year.
