4 Nov: A mob described as “Anti-Sikh and pro-India” reportedly attempted to attack the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Malton Gurdwara in Mississauga, Ontario. According to a statement released by the gurdwara, the mob arrived with brandishing weapons and masks, appearing intent on causing violence and disruption. Swift police response and defensive measures by the Sikh congregation helped to protect the site and prevent further escalation.
The gurdwara leadership expressed deep concern over the attack, pointing out that the incident coincided with the Indian consulate holding events in the region. They emphasized the importance of this timing, as it comes near the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh genocide in India, a time when the Sikh community remembers those who were killed and reaffirms its commitment to justice and human rights.
Daljit Singh Sekhon, President of Sri Guru Singh Sabha Malton, issued a call to Canadian government officials and law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and provide increased protection for the Sikh community. “Upholding the principles of tolerance, respect, and safety for all communities is vital,” he stated, urging action to ensure such threats are addressed and prevented in the future.
The statement also expressed appreciation for the Peel Regional Police, who responded swiftly and made arrests, successfully dispersing the mob. The Sikh community reaffirmed its resilience, vowing that it will not be silenced in the face of intimidation and violence.
