Toronto mother charged with second-degree murder in death of infant, marking city’s 79th homicide of the year

November 25: Toronto police have charged a mother with second-degree murder in connection with the death of her infant. The four-month-old baby was found with serious injuries in a residential building near Roselawn Avenue and Marlee Avenue in midtown Toronto last week. The child’s father had called the police, reporting that the baby was missing. When officers arrived, the baby was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Initially, the mother was charged with failing to provide the necessities of life, but after an autopsy, 30-year-old Karessa Edwards was charged with second-degree murder. The baby’s death is now considered the 79th homicide of the year in Toronto, and the homicide unit is leading the investigation.
