29 Oct: In a spectacular Diwali celebration, President Joe Biden paid tribute to the vibrant South Asian American community at the White House, hosting over 600 influential Indian American congress members, executives, and community leaders.

Highlighting the holiday’s profound meaning, Biden remarked, “Hosting the largest Diwali receptions ever at the White House as President holds immense significance for me.” He expressed his appreciation for the contributions of South Asian Americans, including prominent figures like Vice President Kamala Harris and Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, whom he acknowledged as “key members of my team.”

Emphasizing the enduring resilience and unity of the nation, Biden stated, “In times of adversity and rising hostility, America encourages us all to embody the light.”

Recalling the first Diwali celebration at the White House in 2016, he shared the event’s lasting impact on America’s diverse immigrant communities. Biden also lit the ceremonial diya in the historic Blue Room, symbolizing light’s victory over darkness, and extended heartfelt gratitude to South Asian Americans for their invaluable contributions to democracy and cultural diversity in the U.S.

The event featured remarks from Indian American youth activist Shrusti Amula, a message from astronaut Sunita Williams, and reflections on Diwali’s growing celebration at the White House, where it is now “openly and proudly” embraced.
