Mississauga, ON – SAWITRI Theatre Group is celebrating 21 years of creating, producing and presenting theatre works in and around Mississauga and the Halton-Peel region through its evening-length program VR21 on November 21 and 22, from 7 pm to 9 pm at the recently renovated AN1 Studios.
Founder and Artistic Co-Director, Jasmine Sawant said, “As we look back, we realize that 21 years of theatre-making in Mississauga, the city that is 50 years old, is a milestone moment to celebrate our successes. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the love and support we have received and continue to receive from the artists, the community, the funders, donors and sponsors. Thank you to those who believed in us, cheered for us, cared about us, or commiserated with us. Thank you to those who came to our shows, those who volunteered their time, those who held our hand or paved the way. It is also a time to renew our pledge to continue creating theatre arts, building community, mentoring newcomers and leaving a legacy of South Asian theatre in Mississauga for the new artists and audiences who come after us.”
The evening’s presentations include audio-visuals curated from the archives of SAWITRI Theatre Group, anecdotes from artists past and present, who have been and are integral to the growth of SAWITRI Theatre and the South Asian arts community here. The organizations and artists who have helped evolve the arts will discuss topics of relevance to the arts, sharing anecdotes, experiences and perspectives on the impact of the organization in the South-Asian community in and around Mississauga. ‘VR21’ will also look at the future of SAWITRI Theatre Group and what it holds for newcomers wanting to join the organization.
November 21 is for invited guests, board members, politicians, funders and supporters of the organization and media representatives.
