Hours after an US indictment alleged Gautam Adani, his nephew and six others of bribing Indian government officials to secure power contracts, the White House responded to the matter while emphasising on India-US ties being built on a on strong foundation.
On Wednesday, Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani and six others were indicted by US prosecutors in New York for allegedly offering Rs 2,029 crore in bribes to Indian government officials for securing “lucrative solar energy supply contracts” with state electricity distribution companies.
When asked whether the allegations will impact US-India ties during a press conference yesterday, White House press secretary Jean Pierre said, “On the U.S. and India relationship, we believe that it’s extremely — stands on an extremely strong foundation anchored in — in ties between our people and cooperation — and cooperation across a full range of — of global issues.
And so, what we believe and we are confident about is that we will continue to navigate this issue, as we have with other — with other issues that may have come up, as you just stated. And so, the specifics of this — this is something that SE- — SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and DOJ can speak to directly.
But, again, we believe that we are — this has been that — this relationship between India and the US has been built on a strong foundation.”
