Y Media Big Shot: Christa Deguchi Secures Canada’s First Gold Medal by Defeating South Korea’s Huh Mi-mi in Women’s Judo 57kg Final

PARIS, July 29: Christa Deguchi has secured Canada’s first gold medal at the Paris Olympics by triumphing in the under-57 kilogram judo event. Deguchi, the world’s top-ranked female judoka, clinched victory against South Korea’s Mimi Huh in the final. The match ended in sudden-death overtime when Huh was flagged for a false attack, resulting in her third penalty.

Deguchi’s win serves as a measure of revenge, as she previously lost to Huh in the under-57 kg final at the 2024 world championships. A two-time world champion, Deguchi is now the first-ever Canadian Olympic champion in judo.

She reached the final by defeating France’s crowd favourite, Sarah-Léonie Cysique. Cysique later secured a bronze medal by beating Georgia’s Eteri Liparteliani.
