3rd January 2025: India’s batting struggled as they were bowled out for just 185 runs on the opening day of the fifth Test in Sydney. Captain Rohit Sharma made a surprising decision to sit out, handing leadership to Jasprit Bumrah, who chose to bat first. However, India couldn’t handle Australia’s sharp bowling on a green, bouncy pitch.
Scott Boland was the star performer for Australia, delivering an incredible spell of 4 wickets for just 31 runs in 20 overs. His precision and control with both the new and old ball made life tough for the Indian batters. Boland struck early, dismissing opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for 10, and continued to pressure the batting lineup throughout the day.
Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins also chipped in, picking up key wickets to restrict India’s score. Rishabh Pant top-scored for India with 40 runs, but no one else could build a strong innings.
Before stumps, Bumrah gave India a glimmer of hope by dismissing Usman Khawaja on the final ball of the day. Australia ended Day 1 at 9 for 1, trailing by 176 runs with the match firmly in their control.
