August 4, Paris Olympics: India secured a place in the semifinals of the men’s hockey event at the Paris Olympics by defeating Great Britain 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out on Sunday, despite playing with 10 men for over 40 minutes. This marks their second consecutive semifinal appearance at the Games.
The team was reduced to 10 players after Amit Rohidas received a red card for raising his stick against a Great Britain player. Veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, in his final international tournament, delivered a stellar performance, making numerous crucial saves.
India took the lead in the 22nd minute with a penalty corner goal by Harmanpreet Singh, but Great Britain equalized five minutes later with a field goal by Lee Morton. Despite being a man down, India held their ground and eventually triumphed in the shoot-out, thanks to Sreejesh’s outstanding efforts in goal.
