Y Media Exclusive: Algoma University Celebrates Brampton’s Largest-Ever Convocation with Historic Honours and Student Success

(BRAMPTON, ON): Algoma University proudly celebrated its largest graduating class to date in Brampton with three Convocation ceremonies held over two days, honouring the academic achievements and community contributions of more than 1,700 graduates from across a range of disciplines.

The Convocation ceremonies marked several historic milestones for the institution, including the presentation of Algoma University’s first-ever Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal. The prestigious award was presented to Gia Ky Huynh, a graduate of the Master of Computer Science program, who achieved the highest academic standing across the University’s graduate programs. Huynh also delivered the Expression of Thanks on behalf of the Class of 2025 during the opening ceremony.

“Congratulations to all the Algoma U graduates! We are proud to honour them and recognize the exceptional individuals who guide and inspire them,” said Dr. István Imre, Vice-President Academic and Research at Algoma University. “This year’s Brampton Convocation ceremonies were a celebration of perseverance, excellence, and community spirit. We are growing, we are thriving, and our students are leaving here ready to make an impact.”

Another highlight was the presentation of the 2025 Award for Excellence in Teaching to Professor Shahrukh Asif Khan, a faculty member whose impact extends far beyond the classroom. Widely regarded as the pulse of student life at the Brampton campus, Professor Khan is known for his immersive, experiential teaching methods and for his deep commitment to student mentorship and success. He was recognized for fostering innovation, inclusion, and real-world learning experiences that have shaped the academic and personal journeys of countless students.
