Y Media Exclusive: Markham Secures Provincial Funding to Replace Pumping Station, Boost Flood Protection and Housing

The City of Markham, in partnership with the Ontario government, has announced a $6.6 million investment to replace the aging Enterprise stormwater pumping station, a critical step in improving flood protection and supporting new housing development.

At Monday’s event, Mayor Frank Scarpitti thanked MPP Billy Pang, Premier Doug Ford, and Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma for their support, noting that when infrastructure fails, entire communities are put at risk. “Last summer’s flooding caused major disruptions on roads and GO Transit and created real anxiety for residents,” Scarpitti said.

The new pumping station project will increase capacity to handle heavy rainstorms and help protect thousands of homes and businesses from flooding. The City of Markham will contribute $1.79 million, while the Ontario government will provide over $4.8 million through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Fund.

Mayor Scarpitti highlighted that the project is vital not only for safety but also for growth, as it will help facilitate up to 16,000 housing units, with 2,200 already under construction. Over the next 30–40 years, the area is expected to see 80,000 to 100,000 new residents, making sustained infrastructure investment essential.

MPP Pang emphasized the province’s commitment under the Building Faster and Smarter Act, 2025, which streamlines housing development and boosts infrastructure investment. “The government is adding $400 million in immediate funding, bringing the housing-enabling infrastructure funds to nearly $2.3 billion over four years,” Pang announced.

The upgraded pumping station is expected to benefit up to 2,500 homes, ensuring both flood protection and smoother housing development as Markham continues to grow.
