Y Media Foreign Policy Report: FM Anita Anand defends Modi’s G7 invite amid RCMP probe, calls for Gaza ceasefire

7 June: Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand addressed the media following her official visit to France and the United Kingdom, where she met with her counterparts to discuss Canada’s strategic partnerships and shared international priorities. The press conference, held on June 7, 2025, also saw Anand respond to critical questions surrounding Canada’s decision to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 Summit in Alberta.

Anand confirmed that her discussions with French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy revolved around strengthening economic ties, defence collaboration, and coordination on global security issues. High on the agenda was continued support for Ukraine, both in the short and long term, with Anand reaffirming Canada’s commitment to peace and security in the region.

On the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Anand reiterated Canada’s call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the unimpeded delivery of food and aid. She emphasized that “the level of suffering in the region is intolerable,” echoing a joint declaration signed by Canada, the UK, and France calling for humanitarian access and a two-state solution.

Addressing growing concerns over Prime Minister Mark Carney’s invitation to PM Modi—amid an ongoing RCMP investigation into allegations of foreign interference—Anand struck a firm tone defending the integrity of Canadian institutions. “There is an independent investigation underway by the RCMP, and the Government of Canada plays no role in that process,” she stated, adding that the invitation does not compromise the rule of law. “Canada will never undermine the independence of our institutions.”

Anand clarified that the G7 invitation reflects Canada’s responsibility as host to engage global leaders on urgent international challenges. “Leaders from multiple countries have been invited to this summit to address pressing global issues, including economic recovery and geopolitical stability,” she said.

When asked about Canada’s future dialogue with India, particularly concerning law enforcement cooperation, Anand declined to comment on the specifics of the recent call between Carney and Modi but acknowledged the importance of structured engagement on security matters.

Reaffirming Canada’s broader goals for the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Anand noted that the gathering will serve as a platform to discuss issues like artificial intelligence, economic resilience, and coordinated responses to international crises. The Prime Minister, she added, looks forward to welcoming global leaders and reinforcing Canada’s leadership role on the world stage.
