TORONTO — Greg Rickford, Minister of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation and Minister Responsible for Ring of Fire Economic and Community Partnerships released the following statement in recognition of National Indigenous History Month:

“June marks National Indigenous History Month, an opportunity to reflect and honour the legacies of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Ontario and across Turtle Island. It also brings the longest day of the year, known as the Summer Solstice, taking place contemporaneously with National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21.

This month, I encourage you to take time to learn the invaluable contributions, stories and traditions of Indigenous peoples by attending local events, supporting Indigenous artists, businesses and tourism, and deepening your understanding of the traditional territories and treaties that cover Ontario.

As part of our government’s commitment to protect Ontario, we continue working with communities to ensure reconciliation is a reality for Indigenous peoples – now and for future generations.”
