Toronto police are investigating after gunfire was reported outside the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto early Monday morning.
Officers were in the area of the consulate, located at 360 University Avenue, at approximately 4:46 a.m. when they heard multiple gunshots. Investigators later located evidence of a shooting outside the building.
Police said a white sedan was seen fleeing the scene shortly after the gunfire. No suspect description has been released, and no injuries have been reported.
The incident comes months after the U.S. Consulate was targeted in another shooting on March 10. U.S. authorities have alleged that attack was linked to an international campaign by Iranian-backed groups targeting sites across North America and Europe. An Iraqi national in the United States has since been charged with terrorism-related offences in connection with that case.
Last month, Toronto police also arrested 18-year-old Sheldon Tracy-Stewart as part of the investigation into the earlier shooting. He faces 11 charges, including discharging a firearm, possessing a prohibited firearm and vehicle theft. Court documents also allege he breached the conditions of a previous release order.
The earlier investigation was marked by the death of Toronto Police Emergency Task Force Const. Marc Pinizzotto, who was fatally shot while assisting with a search warrant related to the case. Nineteen-year-old Nicholas Bennett has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the officer’s death.
Police continue to investigate Monday’s shooting and are asking anyone with information to contact investigators.
