International climate activist Greta Thunberg has voiced support for student-led protests in India, describing the movement as a powerful example of “people power” and praising young people for uniting in their demand for greater transparency, accountability and fairness in the country’s education system.
Speaking at an event organized by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) UK in London, Thunberg called for international solidarity with Indian students seeking reforms to competitive examinations and stronger democratic accountability.
“The Indian student protest has made us all proud. They have given us hope. They show what we can accomplish when people come together and resist. They show the true meaning of people power,” Thunberg said.
She said the students’ campaign represents a broader fight for justice, democracy and human rights, urging people around the world to support the movement.
“The Indian students’ struggle for justice and the broader struggle for democracy and liberation is also our struggle. We all have to come together now and rise up in solidarity with India,” she added.
The London event comes as student organizations and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) continue protests in India over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Demonstrators have called for reforms to the examination process, increased transparency and stronger accountability measures.
The movement has gained international attention, with solidarity events taking place in several countries. Organizers have emphasized that the campaign remains peaceful and is focused on ensuring fairness and equal opportunities for students.
The Students’ Federation of India UK reaffirmed its support for the protests, describing them as a democratic movement advocating for educational justice. The London gathering brought together students, activists and members of the Indian diaspora in support of the campaign.
Thunberg’s participation has further elevated the movement’s international profile. Best known for her climate activism, she has increasingly spoken out on issues related to democracy, human rights and social justice, arguing that these causes are closely interconnected.
Speakers at the event stressed the importance of peaceful democratic engagement, constitutional methods and non-violent advocacy in pursuing reforms to India’s education and examination systems.
The student movement continues to press for greater transparency in examinations and recruitment processes, with supporters arguing that equal opportunity, fairness and democratic participation are fundamental principles that resonate beyond India’s borders.
