Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit India next month to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi, marking his first trip to the country in seven years.
Sources indicate that Chinese officials are currently finalizing logistics and security arrangements for the September 12–13 summit. Xi is expected to travel with a massive delegation of roughly 400 officials—more than double the size of his entourage during his last visit in 2019.
The high-profile visit serves as a key indicator of a diplomatic thaw following severe bilateral friction. Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors escalated significantly following deadly Himalayan border clashes in 2020, which resulted in a four-year military standoff until a disengagement agreement was reached in October 2024.
While final travel plans and potential bilateral meetings between Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi remain unconfirmed, officials from both nations view the summit as an opportunity to expand economic engagement while managing persistent security and border disputes.
