Albertans Overwhelmingly Vote To Remain Part Of Canada In Historic Referendum

Albertans have voted to remain part of Canada, according to media projections, rejecting a referendum proposal to initiate the province’s separation process. Preliminary results indicate that approximately 75 per cent of voters supported remaining in Canada, while 25 per cent backed separation. Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the outcome, saying he was thrilled that Albertans had chosen unity.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also expressed satisfaction with the results and is scheduled to address the province Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. MT to discuss the path forward. Meanwhile, two prominent separatist figures said they would wait for the complete vote count before commenting on the outcome. Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre welcomed the decision, emphasizing that political attention should now shift toward affordability, public safety and reducing immigration.

Results from the referendum’s nine other questions, covering immigration and constitutional matters, remain closer, although most are currently leaning toward approval. Smith previously indicated that a majority of “yes” votes on these questions would strengthen her mandate to negotiate with the federal government. The results could therefore shape future discussions between Alberta and Ottawa, even as voters reject the prospect of provincial separation.
