B.C. Premier says Tumbler Ridge mass shooting probe in final stage

The investigation into the deadly Tumbler Ridge mass shooting has entered its final stages, according to British Columbia Premier David Eby, offering a potential step toward answers nearly three months after the tragedy that claimed eight lives.

Speaking alongside Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka, Eby said the RCMP has indicated the probe is nearing completion, though no exact timeline has been provided. The shooting, carried out by Jesse Van Rootselaar, killed six schoolchildren and two others, devastating the small northeastern B.C. community.

As the investigation wraps up, attention is shifting toward accountability and next steps. B.C.’s chief coroner has already announced an inquest into the incident, which will proceed once the police investigation concludes. Meanwhile, opposition leaders are intensifying calls for a full public inquiry, arguing it would go beyond an inquest to examine systemic failures and assign responsibility.

Mayor Krakowka emphasized the ongoing emotional toll on the community of roughly 2,600 residents, noting that recovery will take time. He highlighted continued provincial support, including access to mental health resources, as residents cope with grief in different ways.

The provincial government has signalled openness to further review mechanisms, including the possibility of a joint federal-provincial commission. For now, officials say they are awaiting the final findings of the police investigation, which is expected to shape the next phase of accountability and healing.
