A deadly car explosion near the historic Red Fort in New Delhi on Monday evening has left at least eight people dead and several others injured, prompting a nationwide security alert and a counterterrorism investigation. Authorities say the blast occurred when a Hyundai i20 was stopped at a red light, triggering a fire that spread quickly and destroyed several nearby cars and auto-rickshaws. Witnesses described a sudden, powerful boom followed by flames and debris scattered across the crowded roadway. Emergency responders rushed victims to nearby hospitals as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
While the cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed, police have registered the case under anti-terrorism laws. India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA), along with forensic specialists, is leading the inquiry. Officials say they are analyzing security camera footage, collecting vehicle fragments, and “exploring all angles” to determine whether the attack was planned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an official visit to Bhutan, condemned the incident and stated that those responsible “won’t be spared.”
In response to the explosion, security has been significantly tightened across the region. Major train stations, New Delhi’s airport and metro system, and several government buildings are now on heightened alert. The U.S. Embassy has advised American citizens in India to avoid crowded areas near Red Fort, while neighboring states have been directed to monitor for any potential related threats.
The location of the blast has added to public concern. The Red Fort is one of India’s most recognized landmarks and a major tourist destination, as well as the site where the Prime Minister delivers the annual Independence Day address. Its proximity to busy markets and residential areas often means large crowds are nearby, raising fears about the scale of potential harm had the blast occurred at a different time.
As investigators continue to search for answers, New Delhi residents and the broader nation are left grappling with shock, grief, and uncertainty over whether this tragedy marks the beginning of a larger threat.
