  1. The only time you might want to opt for a silicone-based primer over a water-based one is if you have issues with makeup settling into your pores. “In that case, you’ll want something that’s going to fill in the pores temporarily to make the makeup stay on top of your skin,” says Irwin. The biggest difference, aside from the fact that they are made with different ingredients, is the consistency of the formulas. “Water-based primers are usually thinner and more lightweight, and are better for normal to dry or dehydrated skin,” explains Blanco. Meanwhile, “Primers with silicone are usually better for normal to oily skin. They also help to blur the appearance of pores and fine lines.” The verdict: Fans of 10-step routines or even three-step routines for that matter: Put down the silicone serum and slowly back away. Silicones may block subsequent ingredients from reaching the skin, rendering anything applied after a silicone product pretty much useless.

As you age, your skin slows down replenishing itself. Dead skin cells aren’t replaced by fresh cells as quickly, which means your skin starts to look dull and uneven, and may even crack. Exfoliants are a great way to help get dead cells off your skin.
