Doug Ford to call snap Ontario election next week, citing need for strong mandate amid looming U.S. tariffs

Premier Doug Ford has announced he will call a snap election for Ontario on Wednesday, citing the looming threat of 25% tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump as a key reason for his decision. The election will be held on February 27, 2025, more than a year ahead of the scheduled June 2026 election.

Ford, who already leads a majority government, stated that he aims to secure “the largest mandate in Ontario’s history” to help push back against the tariffs. He believes having a strong mandate would strengthen Ontario’s position in dealing with Trump and give the opposition more respect.

During his visit to Brampton, Ford also revealed plans to build a tunnel for a light rail transit (LRT) project in the city. He confirmed that he will visit the lieutenant governor on Tuesday to officially dissolve the legislature and call the election on Wednesday.

Ford emphasized that he can manage his duties as premier while campaigning for re-election. He also plans to travel to Washington, D.C. in February to speak with U.S. lawmakers about avoiding the proposed tariffs.
