BRAMPTON, ON (January 24, 2025) – Regional Councillor Paul Vicente celebrates the Ontario government’s announcement to extend the Hazel McCallion Line into downtown Brampton through a transformative rapid transit tunnel. This four-kilometre underground extension from Brampton Gateway Terminal to the city’s downtown core will deliver fast, reliable, and sustainable transit while seamlessly integrating with Brampton Transit, Züm, GO Transit, and other regional systems. Expected to create 47,000 housing units and 17,000 jobs, this project will drive urban renewal, enhance connectivity, and solidify Brampton’s role as a key destination for economic growth and innovation. With clean, electrically powered vehicles and reduced congestion, the extension aligns with Brampton’s vision for a thriving, sustainable, and accessible city. Since 2014, Paul Vicente has fiercely advocated for a LRT to Downtown Brampton, having participated, long before he was elected, in public meetings, town halls and spoken delegations to the City, including a heartfelt presentation to Brampton City Council in 2015 (link below).
“The Hazel McCallion Line extension into downtown Brampton will improve the lives of all Bramptonians. This Council believes in reducing congestion and connecting people to the places they need to be. By investing in sustainable transit infrastructure, we are building a better city for generations to come. I’d like to thank the Province for working with Brampton to help us realize this monumental project.” – Paul Vicente, Regional Councillor, Wards 1& 5, Chair, Public Works & Engineering Committee
“This is a transformative moment for Brampton. The commitment from Premier Ford and the Government of Ontario to fund the extension of the LRT into our city, including a tunnelled section into downtown, is truly a game changer. This is not only the largest undertaking in the history of our city but one that will fundamentally enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, drive economic growth, create jobs, accelerate housing and improve the quality of life for Bramptonians. It’s a bold step toward shaping a future where Brampton continues to thrive and flourish as a dynamic, modern city. We are excited to work alongside the province to bring this vision to life and build a better, more connected Brampton for generations to come.” – Patrick Brown, Mayor, City of Brampton
“By tunnelling the Hazel McCallion Line into downtown Brampton, we’re helping tens of thousands of daily riders connect seamlessly to world-class transit that will extend across the region. As we continue building the Hazel McCallion Line, expanding GO service and building new roads and highways in the region, including Highway 413, we’re helping Brampton residents get where they need to go quickly and conveniently.” – Doug Ford, Premier, Government of Ontario
