14th Jan 2025: Days before his expected announcement to run for the Liberal leadership, former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor Mark Carney shared his thoughts on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation. In an interview on The Daily Show with host Jon Stewart, Carney said Trudeau stepping down improves the Liberal Party’s chances in the next election.
“I think it does give the Liberal Party a chance,” Carney said. He grew up in Edmonton, where his father, Bob Carney, once ran for the Liberals federally, finishing second in Edmonton-South in 1980.
When pressed by Stewart about his leadership plans, Carney remained coy, saying he had “just started thinking about it.” Stewart teased him, saying, “You’re being so coy. I love the chase.”
Carney acknowledged challenges Canadians face, like housing affordability and inflation, and noted the government hasn’t been as focused on these issues as it should be. He added, “That can happen now.”
Stewart joked about the tough political climate, saying he would “run the other way.” Carney countered by highlighting his experience in economics, dealing with prices, and having a plan to tackle current challenges. He also described himself as an outsider, not part of the current government.
The Liberal Party will choose its next leader on March 9, with candidates needing to declare their intentions by January 23. Carney’s political ambitions were rumored even before Trudeau announced his resignation.
