G7 foreign ministers gather in Niagara as Canada hosts final meeting of its presidency

Foreign ministers from the G7 nations — including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio — are meeting in Niagara-on-the-Lake beginning Tuesday for two days of strategy talks focused on global security, economic resilience and growing geopolitical tensions. The summit, hosted by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, includes representatives from France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union. It is the second G7 foreign ministers’ gathering since Donald Trump returned to the White House and comes near the end of Canada’s year as G7 president.
Opening remarks and the traditional group photo are set for Tuesday evening, with the main discussions scheduled for Wednesday, followed by a closing press conference.

Canada has also invited officials from several non-G7 “outreach countries,” including Ukraine, Mexico, India, Brazil, South Korea, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Australia. The aim is to broaden cooperation on shared issues like energy transitions, critical minerals, technology security, maritime safety and defending democratic institutions. Anand has called the meeting “a pivotal moment for international cooperation.” Rubio’s office, however, emphasized that he will be pushing to advance U.S. priorities, including Trump’s “peace initiatives” in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as security concerns in Haiti and Sudan.

The talks also unfold amid ongoing trade and sovereignty tensions between Canada and the U.S., though Anand said in an interview she expects discussions to be constructive, noting that Rubio has recently toned down previous hardline rhetoric.
