23 October: Global banking giant HSBC has appointed British Indian executive Pam Kaur as its Chief Financial Officer, marking the first time a woman will hold the position in the bank’s 160-year history. The 60-year-old finance veteran will step into her new role on January 1, 2025.
Kaur is a graduate of Panjab University with an MBA in Finance and is a qualified Chartered Accountant. She brings decades of experience in the financial sector, having spent nearly 12 years at HSBC in senior roles including Group Chief Risk and Compliance Officer.
Her career began in internal audit at Citibank, and she has held significant positions at major financial institutions such as Citigroup, Lloyds Banking Group, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), and Deutsche Bank. Before joining HSBC, she served as CFO and Chief Operating Officer for the restructuring and risk division at RBS and led compliance and anti-money laundering initiatives at Lloyds Banking Group.
In her new role, Kaur will oversee HSBC’s financial strategy and operations during a pivotal time for the global banking industry. Her appointment is seen as a significant step forward for diversity and inclusion within the sector.
Emphasizing the importance of adaptability, Kaur wrote in a LinkedIn post three years ago: “The world around us is changing faster than ever before. We all need to evolve and thrive in a dynamic culture where we’re developing future-ready skills.”
