December 2024: The Indian Supreme Court has raised serious concerns about the health of Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike since November 26. On Friday, the court directed the Central and Punjab governments to urgently meet with Dallewal to persuade him to end his protest. The court stressed that no force should be used unless it is absolutely necessary to save his life.
Dallewal, protesting at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana, has been fasting for 17 days to highlight farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for crops. The Supreme Court has also instructed officials to ensure Dallewal receives immediate medical assistance.
Dallewal’s hunger strike has drawn attention to farmers’ ongoing struggles, with 13 demands outlined as part of his protest.
