Israel and Hamas agree to ceasefire deal, paving way for hostage release and humanitarian aid in Gaza

15th Jan: A ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Hamas and Israel has been reached after more than 15 months of violence in Gaza, according to President Joe Biden. The deal, which will start on Sunday, was announced in Doha, Qatar, where extensive negotiations took place over several weeks. The agreement is still pending approval from Israel’s cabinet.

In the lead-up to the deal, President Biden made several calls to leaders in Israel, Qatar, and Egypt. Steve Witkoff, President-elect Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, also played a significant role. He met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the weekend to emphasize Trump’s desire to reach an agreement before his inauguration on Monday.
