SCARBOROUGH — The Ontario government is investing $880,399 through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) in a Majestic Medical Training Centre Project to train up to 100 healthcare professionals in Scarborough for in-demand careers in healthcare. This latest round of funding brings Ontario’s total investment through the Skills Development Fund to up to $1.4 billion.
Raymond Cho, MPP for Scarborough North, was joined by his Scarborough colleagues MPP Aris Babikian, MPP David Smith and Vijay Thanigasalam at the Ming Wui Medical Centre located inside Majestic City, an indoor shopping mall in Scarborough, to make this funding announcement today.
In partnership with Majestic City, the Ontario government is investing $880,399 to build a medical training center in Majestic City to boost healthcare sector and enhance training capacity in high-demand fields. The project will focus on healthcare management and advanced diagnostic imaging technology, to fill unmet occupational demands.
“Our government is committed to building a strong healthcare workforce for Scarborough to meet the needs of our diverse and fast-growing community,” said MPP Cho. “It is through partnerships with employers and workers like this project that we can train more medical professionals in high-demand fields and boost our healthcare sector to better serve our community.”
“We are deeply grateful to the Ontario government for this investment which will play a crucial role in enabling us to train up to 100 healthcare professionals here in Scarborough, addressing critical gaps in our healthcare workforce,” said David Lam, President and Owner of Ming Wui Medical Centre, which runs the Majestic Medical Training Centre Project. “By focusing on high-demand areas such as healthcare management and advanced diagnostic imaging, our project will not only create skilled opportunities but enhance the quality of care and services, directly benefiting our community.”
Through the SDF, the government is investing up to $1.4 billion through SDF’s Training Stream and the Capital Stream which are designed to recruit, train and upskill workers and build or upgrade training centres for the skilled trades.
“After years of neglect and under-investment in the trades from previous Liberal governments, one in three tradespeople are nearing retirement,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “Under Premier Ford, our government has an ambitious plan to build Ontario with a strong labour force. That’s why we’re partnering with local employers, unions, and educators to pass on the expertise and wisdom of the Golden Generation of Skilled Tradespeople to the next generation of students, apprentices, and workers who will build Ontario’s bright future.”
Since its launch in 2021, Ontario’s Skills Development Fund has helped connect approximately 600,000 workers train or upskill for careers in the trades in their local communities, including over 92,000 manufacturing workers, over 66,000 construction workers, over 36,000 PSWs and healthcare workers, and over 27,000 mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction workers.
