Aug 3: As the Paris 2024 Olympics continue, India’s men’s hockey team faces a formidable challenge in their quarterfinal clash against Great Britain. Former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha believes that the Harmanpreet Singh-led squad will need to be at their best to overcome this hurdle.
India finished second in Pool B, securing 10 points from five matches. Their recent 3-2 victory against Australia was historic, marking their first win over the Aussies since the 1972 Olympics. Rasquinha praised the team’s performance but cautioned that the knockout stage is a different ball game altogether.
Rasquinha highlighted that India lost both of their Pro League encounters against Great Britain earlier this year, underscoring the challenge ahead. He stressed the importance of India playing to their strengths, emphasizing high-tempo and aggressive hockey, especially in counter-attacks and defensive efforts.
The former captain also pointed out that Great Britain is known for their high-paced game, which means India must maintain their work rate and strategic play to secure a spot in the semifinals.
The quarterfinal match is scheduled for 1:30 pm IST on Sunday, August 4, and promises to be a test of skill and determination for the Indian team.
