PM Trudeau urges world leaders to set aside differences and address global challenges at UN Summit of the Future

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized the need for world leaders to set aside their differences and address pressing global challenges during his speech at the UN’s Summit of the Future in New York on Sunday. Speaking at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Trudeau stated that leaders have a choice to either ignore the growing instability or work together for the benefit of future generations.

Trudeau stressed the importance of global cooperation, saying, “We must take collective responsibility and put our differences aside to tackle serious global issues and create a future pact.” The Summit of the Future, announced by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in 2021, aims to reform the UN, strengthen multilateralism, and find solutions to modern challenges. It continues through Monday, with high-level debate set to begin on Tuesday.

Guterres has called on member nations to approve the Pact for the Future, which outlines a plan to address various global challenges. However, some countries, including Russia and Saudi Arabia, have resisted certain aspects of the agreement, particularly on climate change and financial reforms.

Trudeau encouraged leaders to embrace the plan, ensuring that every generation has a fair opportunity. During his visit, Trudeau is scheduled to meet with Guterres, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul. He will also appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night.
