Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine killed at least eight people on Thursday, with strikes hitting Kyiv and the northeastern Kharkiv region and damaging civilian infrastructure, including a maternity hospital, Ukrainian officials said.
Two people were killed and eight others injured in Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one of those killed was in the parking lot of a maternity hospital. The facility sustained damage to its facade, windows and doors, but officials said no patients or medical staff were injured. Police also reported damage to nine homes, a post office, warehouses and dozens of vehicles.
In the Kharkiv region, a Russian drone struck a vegetable storage facility at a farm, killing six people and injuring another 12, according to Ukrainian prosecutors. Other regions were also targeted, with authorities reporting infrastructure damage in Rivne and attacks in Volyn, which borders Poland.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia’s overnight barrage involved 282 drones and other weapons, along with an unspecified number of ballistic and hypersonic missiles. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was in New York for the UN General Assembly, said residential buildings, energy and logistics infrastructure and the maternity hospital were among the sites struck.
Zelenskyy renewed his call for additional air-defence support, particularly interceptors capable of countering ballistic missiles. He argued that greater international pressure was needed to deter further Russian attacks.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces targeted Ukrainian defence facilities as well as logistics and telecommunications centres and vessels it said were being used by the Ukrainian military.
