Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to call a provincial election as early as next week, according to sources close to the government. It is anticipated that the election will be announced in the first week of February, though it could happen sooner.
Ford has stated that he believes a new mandate from Ontarians is necessary to address potential economic challenges, particularly the risk of U.S. President Donald Trump imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian goods. Despite holding a large majority in the Ontario legislature, Ford argues that a fresh mandate is needed to protect Ontario’s economy, businesses, jobs, and communities.
On Monday, Ford’s chief of staff emphasized the need for a “strong mandate” to support Ontario’s position. When asked about the timing of the election, Ford told reporters to “stay tuned” and expressed that only the people of Ontario could provide the mandate necessary for these decisions.
