In a groundbreaking move, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is set to introduce a university-level course dedicated to Punjabi music sensation Diljit Dosanjh in the Fall 2026 semester.
The announcement was made during the Billboard Summit at NXNE in Toronto, where Dr. Charlie Wall-Andrews, Assistant Professor at The Creative School at TMU, shared insights about the course. “TMU is proud to launch a course centered on Diljit Dosanjh, whose story reflects the powerful intersection of identity, culture, and global music entrepreneurship,” she stated.
Dr. Wall-Andrews emphasized Dosanjh’s influence, noting, “His rise showcases the global reach and economic value of Punjabi music. Students will analyze how regional sounds influence global pop culture, unify diasporic communities, and build sustainable, authentic creative industries.”
Diljit Dosanjh has emerged as a global cultural icon, boasting over 14 studio albums and 50+ singles. His historic achievements include becoming the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella, the first to appear on a U.S. late-night show, and the first turban-wearing performer on the Met Gala red carpet.
Sonali Singh, CEO of Ripple Effects, praised the initiative, saying, “Creating a course around an artist like Diljit is both an honour and a necessity. His journey goes beyond fame—it symbolizes cultural pride, artistic freedom, and representation for Punjabi and South Asian communities. His impact deserves academic recognition.”
Mo Ghoneim, President of Billboard UK and Canada, added, “We’re thrilled to support this project with TMU and The Creative School. Diljit’s career bridges cultures and generations. He is the heartbeat of a global movement, and his story belongs in the classroom.”
In addition to his music career, Diljit remains a prominent figure in cinema. His upcoming horror-comedy film Sardaar Ji 3 is set to release overseas on June 27. The movie, directed by Amar Hundal and co-produced by Dosanjh, stars Hania Aamir, Neeru Bajwa, Manav Vij, and others.
This course marks a significant academic recognition of Punjabi pop culture and positions Dosanjh’s career as a case study in global influence and cultural entrepreneurship.
