Trump caused a stir with a social media post on Monday, where he referred to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” The post also highlighted a surprise dinner between the two leaders at Mar-a-Lago during the Thanksgiving weekend, which Trump described as “a pleasure.” He expressed optimism about their discussions, particularly on trade and tariffs, and hinted at future meetings to continue these talks.

In his post, Trump reiterated his pledge to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican exports if the two countries fail to address issues related to undocumented migration and drug trafficking into the U.S. While he claimed these measures would yield “spectacular” results, experts warn that such tariffs could be disastrous for Canada’s economy, which heavily depends on exports to the United States, especially in oil and automobile sectors.

Despite extensive discussions on tariffs during their dinner, reports suggest that Trudeau was unable to shift Trump’s position. Trudeau’s office has so far declined to comment on the matter.

Trump has continued to mock Canada publicly, even suggesting that the country could become the 51st U.S. state. Last week, he posted a digitally altered image of himself on a mountaintop with a Canadian flag, captioned “Oh Canada.”
