U.S.-Iran Talks Postponed As Israel’s Clashes With Hezbollah Strain Truce

Planned U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland have been postponed after U.S. Vice-President JD Vance delayed a scheduled trip to the country, casting uncertainty over the next phase of a landmark agreement aimed at ending hostilities between Washington and Tehran.

The White House said logistical challenges meant plans for the negotiations had not been finalized, adding that both sides remain committed to beginning technical discussions as soon as possible. Swiss officials later confirmed that preparations continue despite the postponement.

The talks were expected to focus on implementing the recently signed 14-point Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran. The agreement includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, lifting U.S. sanctions on Iran, a proposed $300-billion reconstruction plan, and a commitment by Iran not to pursue nuclear weapons. Both sides also agreed to seek a final comprehensive deal within 60 days.

The delay comes amid renewed violence in Lebanon, where Israeli airstrikes killed at least 18 people overnight, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The Israeli military said it targeted infrastructure and personnel linked to the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.

Israel also reported that four of its soldiers were killed in attacks attributed to Hezbollah. The latest exchange of fire has raised concerns about the durability of the broader regional de-escalation efforts outlined in the U.S.-Iran agreement.

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump expressing hopes that a ceasefire would take hold “on all fronts,” including Lebanon, fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has continued since the deal was announced.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said he approved the agreement despite reservations, while emphasizing that future negotiations with Washington would not mean acceptance of U.S. positions.

The postponement highlights the challenges facing the emerging U.S.-Iran accord, as diplomats attempt to translate the agreement into lasting stability while conflict continues to simmer across the region.
