Walmart Canada says it has reduced prices on hundreds of everyday items to help ease the financial burden on shoppers — but one retail analyst warns the move may not be as broad-reaching as it seems.
Retail expert Bruce Winder advises consumers to compare prices carefully, cautioning that selective price drops can create the illusion that everything in the store is competitively priced. “When you lower a basket of items, it gives the impression the whole store is cheap — but that’s not always true,” Winder said. He also suggested Walmart’s decision may be influenced by ongoing trade tensions and a growing “buy Canadian” sentiment, which could be drawing shoppers toward domestic retailers. “Walmart might be feeling the pressure more than usual,” he added. Price Drops on Key Essentials Walmart Canada says that since February, it has reduced prices on essential products like fresh produce, bathroom tissue, bottled water, cheese, ground beef, and shampoo.
The company also pledged to maintain consistent stock of these items.“At a time when Canadians are feeling more financially stretched than ever, we’ve lowered the price of hundreds of key items,” said Walmart Canada CEO Venessa Yates. “We want Canadians to know we’re working hard to help them save.”
