Y Media Foreign Policy Report: PM Modi’s Historic Visit to Cyprus Strengthens Bilateral Ties and Global Diplomacy

16 June: In a landmark diplomatic moment, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his historic two-day visit to Cyprus, marking the first official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Mediterranean nation. His visit underscored the deepening ties between India and Cyprus, as both nations committed to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

Conferred with Cyprus’ Highest Honour

During the visit, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides conferred upon Prime Minister Modi the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest civilian honour of Cyprus. Expressing his gratitude, PM Modi dedicated the award to the friendship between India and Cyprus, as well as to the strength and aspirations of the 1.4 billion Indians. “This honour reflects the cultural harmony of our nation and the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The world is one family),” Modi said. He emphasized that the award represents the shared values, mutual understanding, and commitment to peace and stability between the two countries.

This recognition marks the 23rd international award bestowed upon Prime Minister Modi by a foreign nation, further solidifying his growing stature as a global statesman.

High-Level Bilateral Talks

At the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, PM Modi held wide-ranging discussions with President Christodoulides, covering trade, investment, security, defence, technology, and regional stability. Both leaders agreed on the significance of enhancing cooperation in sectors such as:

  • Economic and trade partnerships
  • Defence and security collaboration
  • Technological and innovation exchanges
  • Energy, connectivity, and tourism

President Christodoulides acknowledged India’s vital role as a global power and reiterated Cyprus’ long-standing support for India on critical international issues, including Kashmir. In return, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s consistent backing of Cyprus on matters related to Turkish occupation and reunification efforts.

The two leaders also adopted a Joint Declaration, signaling a new chapter in bilateral relations and opening doors for greater cooperation between India, Cyprus, and the European Union, particularly as Cyprus prepares to assume the EU Council Presidency in 2026.

Cultural Diplomacy and Public Reception

PM Modi was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora upon his arrival in Cyprus. The Indian community, though small in number, holds a notable presence in sectors like education, healthcare, and business, and contributes actively to Cypriot society. Modi praised their contributions and expressed his appreciation for their role in strengthening India-Cyprus relations.

In a symbolic moment reflecting the deep respect for Indian traditions, a member of the Nicosia Municipal Council, Michaela Kythreoti Mhlapa, touched PM Modi’s feet as a mark of respect during a public event. This gesture quickly went viral on social media and was widely seen as a reflection of India’s rising global stature and cultural influence.

Tribute to Makarios III

During his visit, PM Modi laid a floral wreath at the memorial of Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus, honoring his contribution to the nation’s history and independence.

A Strengthening Strategic Partnership

Both leaders highlighted the growing strategic significance of their partnership amid global geopolitical shifts. President Christodoulides described Cyprus as a “predictable and secure ally of India” in the Eastern Mediterranean and a gateway for India to deepen ties with the European Union.

In his closing remarks, PM Modi expressed optimism about the future of India-Cyprus relations, stating, “Together, we will not only strengthen the progress of our two nations but also contribute towards building a peaceful and secure global environment.”
