U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his administration is considering renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” citing deteriorating commercial ties with Canada’s most populous province. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the U.S. does not expect to do significant business with Ontario moving forward, mirroring a previous executive action where he sought to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
The renaming proposal comes amid a sharp escalation in cross-border trade friction. Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended bilateral trade negotiations, citing U.S. demands that infringed on Canadian sovereignty and cultural protections. In response, Washington imposed 50 percent tariffs on $28 billion worth of Canadian exports, prompting Ottawa to announce dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs taking effect on September 8.
The trade impasse has triggered intense personal exchanges between political leaders. Ontario Premier Doug Ford sharply criticized Trump’s trade policies, labeling him a “bully” during a public address. Trump responded on social media by calling the premier “Flunky Ford.”
However, in a subsequent media appearance, Premier Ford sought to lower the temperature, describing the President’s post as political rhetoric. He emphasized the deep economic integration between the two nations, urging both sides to resume negotiations to reach a balanced trade agreement. Prime Minister Carney similarly indicated that Canada remains open to resuming talks once Washington shifts its approach and treats Canada as an equal partner.
