Canada’s Unemployment Rises To 6.6% In August Amid Slower Job Growth And Tough Summer Market

Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 6.6% in August, up from 6.4% in July. The job market added just 22,000 jobs last month, falling short of keeping pace with population growth.

While there were gains in education, healthcare, and finance sectors, job numbers dropped in other areas like professional services and utilities.

Students had a tough summer job market, with their unemployment rate hitting 16.7% from May to August, the highest since 2012 (excluding 2020). Black, Chinese, and South Asian students faced even higher rates, with Black students’ unemployment soaring to 29.5%, a significant increase from last summer.
