Jan 2025: A new political party, Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), led by MP Amritpal Singh, has entered the political scene in Punjab. The announcement was made at the Maghi Mela in Muktsar. The party aims to take over the Panthic space previously controlled by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which is currently facing challenges.
Amritpal Singh, who is in jail under the National Security Act in Dibrugarh, Assam, was represented by his father, Tarsem Singh, at the event. Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, an MP from Faridkot and son of one of the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, also attended the conference.
A five-member committee has been set up to manage the party until a new president is elected. The committee includes Tarsem Singh, Sarbjit Singh Khalsa, Amardeep Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Surjit Singh. They have formed a panel to decide the party’s constitution, agenda, policy, and discipline, and will advise on the party’s structure and activities.
A seven-member recruitment committee has been created to run a membership drive over the next three months, with elections for delegates and the central committee to be held soon. The new president will be elected on April 13, and the party’s framework will be established.
