The federal New Democrats have successfully held onto their long-established stronghold in Winnipeg’s Elmwood-Transcona riding. Leila Dance, representing the NDP, narrowly defeated Conservative candidate Colin Reynolds, citing the community’s support for priorities like healthcare and addressing the rising cost of living. Since its creation in 1988, the riding has almost exclusively elected New Democrats, except for one instance.
The seat became available after Daniel Blaikie, a three-term MP, resigned in March to take a role with the Manitoba government. Political analyst Christopher Adams noted that NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s efforts, including multiple visits to Winnipeg, were critical in securing this close victory. Losing the riding would have been a significant setback for the party.
Adams also pointed out that despite the Conservative loss, their significant increase in popular vote compared to the 2021 election signals growing momentum for the party. Dance, following her win, expressed her commitment to addressing the cost of living issues in Ottawa, referencing the rising price of groceries as a pressing concern for her constituents. Meanwhile, the Liberal candidate Ian MacIntyre finished far behind in third place.
