Ontario appoints former federal health minister Jane Philpott to lead initiative connecting all residents to primary care in five years

Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government has appointed Jane Philpott, a former federal Liberal health minister, to lead efforts aimed at connecting every Ontarian to primary care within the next five years.

According to the Ontario Medical Association, over 2.5 million people in Ontario currently do not have a family doctor.

Philpott, who is the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University and the director of its School of Medicine, expressed her commitment to ensuring that every Ontarian has access to a family doctor or nurse practitioner as part of a publicly funded team.

Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones emphasized her confidence in Philpott, stating there is no one better suited to achieve this goal. Philpott will take on her new role as chair of the primary care action team in the Ministry of Health starting December 1. The government says she will implement a collaborative model of primary care that she previously developed with colleagues in the Frontenac, Lennox, and Addington Ontario Health Team.

The plan will focus on improving services during weekends and after hours, reducing paperwork for family doctors and primary care providers, and enhancing connections to specialists and digital resources.
