Paris Olympics 2024: Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh Make History with Bronze Medal in 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team Shooting

Chateauroux, July 30: Indian shooters Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh made history by winning a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. This achievement marked India’s sixth Olympic medal in shooting and its first in a team event. Manu Bhaker also became the first athlete from independent India to win two medals in one Olympic edition. She had previously made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting.

Competing at the National Shooting Center in Chateauroux, Bhaker and Singh defeated South Korea’s Oh Ye Jin and Wonho Lee 16-10 in the bronze medal match. Oh Ye Jin had won the gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event earlier.

Manu Bhaker started the match strongly, scoring 10.2 on her first shot. Although Sarabjot Singh’s 8.6 on his initial shot cost India the first two points, he quickly recovered, scoring 10.5, 10.4, and 10 to help India gain the next six points. Bhaker continued her strong performance, hitting at least 10 on her first seven shots. Despite a comeback from the South Koreans, India secured the medal with a final shot of 10.2 by Singh.

The Indian duo had 19 of their 26 shots score at least 10, while the South Koreans had 12 shots reach that mark.

Earlier, Bhaker and Singh finished third in the qualifying round, behind teams from Turkey and Serbia. Serbia won the gold medal, and Turkey took silver.

India has now won two shooting medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, matching their previous best performance in shooting from the London 2012 Olympics. At that time, Gagan Narang and Vijay Kumar won silver and bronze, respectively.

India had not won any shooting medals at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won India’s first Olympic shooting medal in 2004 with a silver, and Abhinav Bindra won India’s only gold medal in shooting in 2008.

Manu Bhaker will also compete in the women’s 25m pistol event, starting on Friday. She is the only athlete from India’s 21-member shooting team to participate in multiple individual events.
