Pope Leo XIV Honours Pope Francis On First Death Anniversary

Pope Leo XIV paid tribute to his predecessor Pope Francis on the first anniversary of his death, remembering him as a spiritual leader defined by compassion, humility and a deep commitment to the poor.

Speaking to reporters during a flight from Angola to Equatorial Guinea, Leo described Francis as a “great gift” to both the Church and the world, highlighting his legacy of preaching God’s mercy and standing in solidarity with marginalized communities.

Francis, who died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday last year after suffering a stroke, had continued to inspire followers even in his final days, delivering a last public Easter greeting after a prolonged illness. His death set the stage for the conclave that elected Leo XIV — formerly American missionary Robert Prevost — as his successor.

In his tribute, Leo reflected on Francis’ most powerful messages, including his emphasis on human dignity, fraternity and forgiveness. He also recalled the late pope’s landmark 2015 Holy Year dedicated to mercy, as well as his outreach to the poorest and most vulnerable.

“So many times what he did was live truly being close to the poorest, the smallest, the sick, children, the elderly,” Leo said, underscoring the pastoral legacy that defined Francis’ papacy.

Commemorations are taking place in Rome to mark the anniversary, including a Mass at St. Mary Major Basilica, where Francis is buried, and the release of new books reflecting on his life and influence.

Observers note that Francis had played a key role in shaping his successor’s path, having promoted Prevost within the Vatican hierarchy years before his election — a move now seen as laying the groundwork for continuity in leadership and vision within the Catholic Church.
